A Butler County woman tied herself up, gagged herself and took incriminating photos of herself to fake a kidnapping, Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said.
Jones said Thelma Williams, 38, posted photos to social media, saying that someone tied her to a pole in a basement. Williams said a masked man entered her home early Thursday morning, claiming he tied her up and cut off her clothes, Jones said.
She went on to say that the man used her phone to videotape the event, and later post the videos to her Facebook account, officials said.
A third party called 911.
“They hacked her old Facebook account. It has video and a picture of her and it says that they have her and they’re going to kill her,” the 911 caller told a dispatcher.
Police initiated a full response — including a helicopter search and closing down a highway — which cost thousands of dollars, Jones said.
As investigators looked at the story closer they found things that didn’t add up.
“It appears she took the videos herself. We can actually see her waiting for it to come on so she can get her serious face on,” Jones said.
The questioning was intensified by detectives.
“Then her story starts unraveling and then we find the story to be totally a fabrication,” Jones said.
Jones said Williams tied herself up and made the posts from a McDonald’s.
“You see this all over the country,” Jones said, calling it “one of the most bizarre cases” his department has ever had.
Williams daughter was upset that her mother was arrested.
“If my mom made this up, it’s not for attention. It’s because she needs help, not because she needs to be behind bars,” William’s daughter, Lorin Karol said.
Jones asked for the woman to be “prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
And Dammit she should be punished. Wtf lady! All these women who are clearly victimized and you’re over there crying wolf.
