A vehicle pulled from the Missouri River Friday has been confirmed to belong to Toni Anderson, who disappeared in January. A female body was found inside, but as of Sunday, officials have not formally identified the body.
Toni’s 2012 black Ford Focus was discovered a few feet off the bank from Platte Landing Park, about 10 miles away from where Toni was last seen. Anderson’s family had hired a private company to use sonar to search parts of the river. They picked up an image of the submerged vehicle and alerted authorities.
A black SUV was also pulled from the water, but it is not believed to be related to the investigation into Toni’s disappearance at this time.
The body has been sent for an autopsy, where an official identification will be determined along with a cause and manner of death.
Authorities said it could take several days for any additional information to be released.
Toni was last seen around 4:30 a.m. on January 15. The 20-year-old left her serving job at Chrome, an adult entertainment club, and was reportedly headed to meet friends across town. But she was pulled over on her way by a North Kansas City police officer for an illegal lane change.
Authorities said Toni told the officer she was almost out of gas. He let her off with a warning, and pointed her in the direction of a nearby QuikTrip store.
At 4:42 a.m., one of Toni’s close friends received a text from Toni reading, “Omg I just got pulled over again.” It’s unclear if that text was sent in reference to the North Kansas City officer’s stop or if Toni had been pulled over again after that. Officials have no record of any other officer pulling Toni over that night.
Authorities have said they do not suspect foul play at this time, but continue to investigate.
Toni was featured in Dateline’s online article series Missing in America in February.
There is no 100% fact that it’s her, however the family was told that the articles of clothing that were found were similar to her items. The family feels that the information they received leads them to make plans for her.
Such a tragedy if it is her.
